In this episode of Moonee Valley Voices, we had the pleasure of speaking with Martin Galea, a veteran conveyancer with over 40 years of experience. As the Director of Tick Box Conveyancing, Martin has been a fixture in the local Moonee Valley community, both through his successful business and his involvement in local sports. With roots that go back decades, Martin’s story offers valuable insights into building a business, contributing to the local community, and the power of connections that stand the test of time.
Recorded in our Moonee Ponds podcast studio, this episode highlights how Martin’s personal and professional journey has shaped not only his own life but also the lives of countless clients and local businesses. With a focus on his long career in conveyancing, Martin also reflects on his time as a coach with the Essendon Royals Soccer Club and the importance of giving back to the community.
From Local Beginnings to Business Success
Martin began his career in Moonee Valley, working as a young law clerk in Ascot Vale. At just 18 years old, he founded his first business, MG Conveyancing, which laid the foundation for his future success. In the episode, Martin reflects on those early years:
“Conveyancing back then was about building relationships with local clients. I hit it off well with real estate agents and the community, and it made me realise that doing good work and building genuine connections would take me far.”
Those early experiences led him to establish Tick Box Conveyancing, which has become a well-known name in the community. For Martin, doing business in Moonee Valley has always been about providing excellent service to clients and building strong relationships with local professionals.
“Moonee Ponds and Essendon are iconic,” Martin explains. “People here expect quality, and they value the service they receive. It’s why I’ve always loved doing business in this area.”
The Importance of Networking and Referrals
A recurring theme in our conversation was the importance of networking and referrals in Martin’s business journey. He shared how critical relationships with local professionals—real estate agents, mortgage brokers, and financial planners—have been to his success.
“When clients are buying or selling property, the real estate agent, accountant, or mortgage broker is often their first point of contact. Those professionals have a big say in who they recommend for conveyancing, so building trust with them has been key.”
Martin’s dedication to building strong, genuine relationships is one of the reasons he’s been able to serve clients across generations. In fact, he mentioned that he’s had the privilege of acting for the grandchildren and great-grandchildren of some of his first clients—a testament to the value of long-term relationships in business.

A Lifelong Commitment to Community and Sport
Aside from his business success, Martin’s passion for local sport has played a significant role in his life. He has spent years coaching soccer in the Moonee Valley area, particularly with the Essendon Royals Soccer Club, where he was both a coach and coaching director.
“Being involved in local sport is about more than just the game,” Martin said. “It’s about building connections, teaching kids life skills, and providing a safe environment for them to grow.”
Martin shared his experiences coaching both of his sons, myself included, and how he always focused on catching players “being good” rather than constantly correcting them. This positive approach has stayed with him throughout his coaching career, and it’s something he believes is essential in both sport and business.
“Coaching is about building character,” Martin reflected. “It’s not just about winning games—it’s about teaching young people to do their best and respect the process. That same mindset applies to business.”
A Changing Industry: Conveyancing in the Digital Age
During the episode, Martin touched on how the conveyancing industry has evolved over the years, particularly with the introduction of PEXA, the electronic settlement system used across Australia.
“The electronification of conveyancing has been one of the biggest changes,” Martin noted. “Now we don’t have to rush into town with bank cheques; everything can be done digitally, which makes the process so much smoother for everyone involved.”
Despite the industry’s modernisation, Martin emphasised the importance of personal service and professionalism in a competitive field. For him, staying connected with clients and providing excellent service remains at the heart of his business philosophy.
Building a Legacy
As Martin reflects on his 40-year career, he’s grateful for the opportunity to build a business that has not only supported his family but also served the local community. Today, with a bit more time on his hands, Martin enjoys spending more time on the golf course—though he’s quick to point out that he’s still very involved in the business.
“I’ve learned the value of delegating and giving my team the freedom to grow,” Martin said. “I’m still across everything, but it’s important to have people you trust so you can focus on growing the business and also enjoy the fruits of your hard work.”
