On PlayHQ? How to Give Your Club a Website That Looks Like Your Club

Your competition runs on PlayHQ, so your registrations, fixtures, ladders and results all live in there, which is exactly where they should sit. The problem committees keep hitting is the website bolted on top: it looks like every other club in the league. Same layout, same fonts, a subdomain that reads `clubname.playhq-sites.com`, and a home page that could belong to a netball club three suburbs over.

A PlayHQ club website solves the data problem, but it does not solve the identity problem. Here is how to keep the live data you already rely on and still end up with a site that looks and feels like your club, not the platform behind it.

What the PlayHQ website builder actually gives you

Credit where it is due, the PlayHQ website builder is a genuine step up from having no site at all, or from a Facebook page doing the job a home page should do. Out of the box you get:

  • A site created straight from your Admin Portal, pre-filled with your club name, logo, address and contacts.
  • Live-data widgets for fixtures, ladders, results, registrations, contacts and news, so you change something once in PlayHQ and the website reflects it.
  • A drag-and-drop editor with two template options: a Club template with around 10 pre-built pages, and an Association template with roughly 25 pages plus mega-menu navigation and a club finder.
  • A free PlayHQ subdomain to start, with the option to connect a custom domain later.
  • Many clubs get live inside an hour, no developer needed.

If your whole goal is “get results and the ladder online without a volunteer copy-pasting them every Sunday night,” it clears that bar. For a lot of smaller clubs, that is enough and you should not overthink it.

Where the template starts to pinch

The trouble shows up once the club wants the site to do more than display data. A few honest limits worth knowing before you commit:

  • It looks templated because it is. You can change colours, fonts and images, but you are decorating a fixed structure. Two clubs on the same template are recognisably siblings, and visitors clock it.
  • News is fiddly. The Posts widget cannot show a “view all articles” link, you cannot set how many articles appear, and you cannot backdate or bulk-import old news. Every article goes in by hand with a current date, so your archive effectively starts from zero.
  • The default address undersells you. `yourclub.playhq-sites.com` is fine for a season, but it is not the address you want on a jumper, a sponsor deck or a Google result.
  • Custom design means leaving the standard product. PlayHQ’s own answer for anything beyond the templates is to contact your sport’s support team about a fully custom build, which is a different conversation to the free builder.

None of this makes PlayHQ the wrong platform for your competition. It just means the website layer is built for speed and consistency, and consistency is the opposite of standing out.

What a club website has to do beyond the ladder

Fixtures and results are the baseline. The website is also the first thing a new family sees when they search your club, the thing a local business looks at before they sponsor you, and the place volunteers go when they need a form or a contact. That job list is bigger than a widget:

  • Register a new player in two taps without hunting through menus.
  • Show sponsors properly with logos, links and a bit of story, because a website that sends real traffic to a sponsor is far easier to renew than a logo lost in a footer.
  • Make the club findable on Google for “your suburb football club,” which a shared subdomain rarely does well.
  • Carry your history and news so the site feels alive between rounds, not just on results day.
  • Look right on a phone, since that is where almost every parent and player actually opens it.

A template can gesture at most of this. Doing it in a way that actually converts a curious parent into a registration, or a local cafe into a sponsor, is where the generic version runs out of road.

You do not have to rip out PlayHQ

This is the part committees get wrong. The choice is not “PlayHQ or a proper website.” Your registrations and competition data can keep living exactly where they are. What changes is the front door.

A purpose-built club site can surface live fixtures, results and the ladder automatically, so nobody is updating scores by hand, while wrapping all of it in a design that is unmistakably yours. Keep the engine, replace the shopfront. That is the whole idea behind Home Ground, our done-for-you football and AFL club website and matchday app: an on-brand site with a live matchday band up top, your fixtures and ladder kept current, and nobody on the committee touching a spreadsheet. We build it, host it and keep it running. If you want to see what that looks like against your current setup, book a look and we will walk through it on your own club.

What “looks like your club” actually means

It is not just picking your two colours from a dropdown. The difference between a template and something that feels owned comes down to a handful of details:

  • A real domain. `yourclub.com.au`, on the jumper, in the search result, in the sponsor email signature.
  • Your identity, not a preset. Your crest used properly, your photography from your ground, spacing and type that match your other assets rather than a stock theme.
  • A matchday band that leads with the game. This weekend’s fixture, live score and where to be, up top where it belongs, not buried under a hero image of a generic pitch.
  • Sponsors treated as partners. Named, linked, given room, so renewals are a conversation about results instead of a favour.
  • Room to grow. News, history, programs and events that are yours to shape, not capped by what a widget will allow.

Green and white for Green Gully, red and white for Essendon Royals, maroon and gold for FC Bulleen Lions. When a visitor lands on the site and instantly knows which club they are looking at, the site is doing its job.

A quick gut-check for your committee

Before your next meeting, run the site you have against these:

1. Could a stranger tell it was your club from a screenshot with the logo cropped out? 2. Is the address something you would print on a jumper? 3. Can a new parent register in under a minute without asking a coach for the link? 4. Do your sponsors get real clicks, or just a spot in the footer? 5. Does it look right on the phone, on a Saturday, with one thumb?

If you are answering “not really” to two or more, the platform is fine and the shopfront needs work.

FAQ

Do I still need PlayHQ if I get a custom club website? Yes, and you should keep it. PlayHQ runs your registrations and competition data. A custom website sits on top and surfaces that live data in a design that looks like your club. You are not replacing the platform, just the front-facing site.

Can a club website pull live fixtures, results and the ladder automatically? It can. A well-built club site keeps your fixtures, results and ladder current on their own, so no volunteer is copying scores across on a Sunday night. The point of difference is doing it inside a design that is yours rather than a shared template.

What is wrong with the free PlayHQ subdomain? Nothing for a season or two. But `clubname.playhq-sites.com` is not an address you want on a jumper, in a sponsor deck or in a Google result. A custom domain like `yourclub.com.au` reads as an established club and helps people find you when they search your suburb.

Is a custom site worth it for a small grassroots club? It depends on what you want the site to do. If you only need results online, the PlayHQ builder is enough. If the site also has to win registrations, keep sponsors happy and represent the club to a new family, the template usually runs out of room and a purpose-built site pays for itself.

Can this work as a team app alternative too? Often, yes. A club website paired with a matchday app can cover most of what clubs use a separate team app for: fixtures, results, news and updates in one on-brand place, without juggling another login.
